#995 The Book You Just Can’t Put Down

good-to-great-jim-collins

In our lives we get a chance to read a handful of really great books.  Let’s think about that for just a minute.   If the average lifespan of a human being is 80 – 100 years, we essentially get a chance to read a couple of good books every twenty years.

Books are the true definition of theater of the mind.  In a time where we have just about every sound available to us at the swipe or pinch of our smartphone, nothing can replace a book.

BOOKS ARE THE TRUE DEFINITION OF THEATER OF THE MIND

You are the one that has to add the sounds and create the soundtrack in your mind. For a few minutes a day you can shut out the rest of the world and get lost in a story, live through someone else or be inspired to be the next great thing.

By and large, a book is the last great form of media that is produced by one single person, the author.  Books also stand the test of time.  Movies have that same ability too, but think of all the great books we read growing up.  A Tale of Two Cities, The Great Gatsby or anything written by Judy Blume.  These are books that will live on forever.

One of my favorite books of all time is the one pictured above, Good to Great by Jim Collins.  This is without a doubt one of the best books ever written for business or for professionals.  This book changed my life and my approach to business.

“GOOD IS THE ENEMY OF GREAT.” - Jim Collins

I typically read this book once a year to make sure I’m staying on track.  If you’ve been fortunate enough to read a good book lately, pass it a long to someone or recommend it to a friend.  Pass the inspiration on and inspire others around you.

If you have a favorite book or one worth checking out, please feel free to share in the comments section below.  I’m always on the look out for a good book.

  1. Todd Folstad Says:

    Hey Maro,

I personally enjoy any of the books by Richard Bach, especially Jonathan Livingston Seagull and The Adventures of a Reluctant Mesiah. His works make you think on a totally other level about why we are here, what we do or need to do to stay here and where we are going after here. He was metaphysics when metaphysics wasn’t cool.
