“Words With Friends” Founders Out at Zynga

According to several reports the brothers behind the popular game Words With Friends are leaving Zynga.  Earlier today, Gamesbeat confirmed that brothers Paul and David Bettner were leaving and there were no additional details around their departure.  Zynga acquired the studio behind Words With Friends, Newtoy, back in 2010 for $53.3 million.

The deal brought over 23 employees to Zynga which at the time had 1,300 employees.  The brothers Bettner subsequently became studio heads at the newly formed Zynga With Friends studio.

Zynga’s stock has been on a steady decline in recent months, and was thought to have it a new low after the stock hit its lowest level ever.  This was brought on after Zynga cut its sales outlook for the third quarter due to lower-than-expected demand. Today’s news couldn’t have come at a worse time for Zynga.
