Whether people want to admit or not, there is a hiring bias against those that have been unemployed for any significant amount of time.  When you’ve been out of work for a while, the thought is something must be wrong with you.  It’s like a house that’s been on the market for too long.  It get’s stay stale.  Everyone wants the new shiny thing.

The key to avoiding this is staying hire ready.  What does that mean exactly?  That means staying desirable in the eyes of recruiters.  You accomplish this by getting involved with as many projects and volunteer opportunities that you can physically handle.  This also helps to fill any gaps you may have in your resume.  The people that are getting jobs now are the people that already have jobs.  It’s time to even that playing field.
